I believe the Earth resets and evolves itself in 'grand cycles' using cosmic radiation. The last time Earth did this I believe some people went and hid underground trying to preserve themselves. The same way many people have prepared with bunkers today. However, the masses had been left to take their chances with the cosmically radiated surface.
