There are a lot of Ethiopians who do not identify themselves as Black. Ethiopians are self isolated people who do not date outside of their culture and race. My experience with them never gave me the feeling or sense that they have a strong connection with other African nations. Marcus Garvey was about Negro pride, African nationalism, Negro self determination and Negro economic independence and he had to understand that Ethiopians saw themselves different from what he was trying put together in Africa.

When I look at the history of Ethiopia during Selassie's reign there were a lot of turmoil, conflicts and suffering. Selassie was complicit in the slave trade that was going on in Ethiopia at the time and was accused by humanitarian groups of ethnic cleansing. In 1974, Selassie was overthrown and murdered by his own people which was evident of the division in Ethiopia. Great men do not create division among his people. What great legacy did Haile Selassie leave Ethiopia with?
Selassie made a lot of good speeches on the world stage but what exactly did he championed? He inherited and was put in a position of power to rule over things he did not earned. On the hand, Marcus Garvey was a self-made man who single handily started a movement that change the way a whole race of people think about themselves while enduring subjugation and oppression. Marcus Garvey was the father of the civil rights movement and his work have inspired the great men who came after.
