John answers viewers questions about the upcoming Spawn movie from Todd MacFarlane.

Anthony Williams writes, Hello John, big fan. My question is regarding the announced Spawn movie. Do you think it’s being made because of the success with Black Panther?. Movie studios seeing that African Americans(like myself) will spend our money to see ourselves represented on film and will support films that do. Keep up the good work.

I don't get likes says:

I think people are naive to think that Black panther has nothing to do with Spawn being rebooted. Its not a coincidence that a black superhero movie that's been getting denied for years suddenly gets the go ahead RIGHT AFTER another black superhero came out and did super well, use your heads guys.

Bruno Miguel Santos says:

Ok, i'm going to put things in a way that will hopefully put evrything in perspective …
Spawn the characther is on itself, just the embodyment of the trope of the horror fiction cliche, guy makes pact with the devil or a demon and consequences occur that turn him/her into something.
If we go to the comics, we know that Spawns are the simbiot between the people who are recruited to fight for the armaggedon, which includes black people, latin, white, asian, you name it, and the armor that is the simbiot itself, as influenced by venom.
Just because it has jamie foxx, doesn't mean they can't do do it with jeremy renner …
Spawn is like i said a title …
Now, i think if the movie is good, then the movie is good, regardless of race, gender and age …
We can see Angela, not being a woman, but, being a man …
If the script is good and the direction is good, then be it …
Blade was a sucess, not only because wesley snipes, it was because the film is that good …
They can recast spawn as a different man …
Hell, they can do spawn being a woman …
As long as the movie is good, people will see it …
Black panther is a marginal character in the avengers perspective … But, because of the impact of the social commentary and the political view of this movie and the fact that is a good movue made it a instant sucess …
Hey, why not invite guillermo del toro to do a spawn movie or a hell blazer movie ?
It's all subjective …
In the end, is the quality of the acting and writting and directing, not just because one black character movie is a sucess that will attract black audience …

Rocky says:

Why must we always have a reason for why another movie is being made? Can’t we just be happy it’s happening? I mean I would understand if there’s question for why something isn’t happening but lol I dunno

PeggymoeXD says:

People should see a movie regardless of the race of a character if it’s good. These questions are stupid. Black panther was successful because it was an amazing movie set in the most popular cinematic universe in existence. Not because the main character was black.

DNICE41 says:

Excellent analysis of the question John.

impact zone says:

no because they've been talking about that spawn reboot for years

Cornelius Williams says:

I think black panther does influence the production of spawn. The audience may not know he's black, but the studios do. They(studios) may be more willing to make this movie because of the success of Black Panther. The studios may be thinking "hey, we can capitilaze on the African American audience if we make a good movie, hire talent, and make the lead a popular African- American Actor." That's what I think.

van Botten says:

The (really bad) Black Panther movie has as much to do with the Spawn reboot, as the (really bad) Spawn-Original had to do with
the Black Panther movie.
Also John said in his Black Panther video that this was the first superhero movie with a black lead, wich would mean, there never was a Spawn movie before, right? Also there never where 3 Blade movies, I guess…
By the way: All these "black" superheroes where created by white dudes, so maybe the problem isn't, that there are too few black superheroes, but that there are just not enough black people that are into comics (and creating them).

JonnySuite13 says:

Yeah Black Panther has absolutely nothing to do with it! People went to see Panther because of Captain America: Civil War!! This Spawn movie really has no legs to stand on! Forget about the 1997 movie, if people really wanna get familiar with the character, then they better look for the animated series that ran on HBO, from '97 – '99!

Maxi Iroh says:

What a dumb question

The K-os says:

strongly aggree with John. im White and i dont give a rats ass about the main character being whatever colour. I care for the movie being good and having a good story and what not.

Gervin Williams says:

Also most people don't know Spawn is black because they dont know Spawn. If you know Spawn thwn you know he's black.

Gervin Williams says:

I think it does, but that shouldnt discredit Spawn in any way.

Aravindha Seneviratne says:

I think it is also important to keep in mind that McFarlane has stated time and time again that Spawn is not the lead of this movie. Despite the title and source material Todd McFarlane has compared the role of Spawn to that of the shark from Jaws in the sense that we won't even see much of the character.
