A heavy police presence greeted the thousands of people in Harlem, New York taking part in the Million Youth March rally.

Metal barricades restricted access to the six-block area along Malcolm X Boulevard which was set aside for Saturday’s event.

The Million Youth March filled up six barricaded blocks in Harlem on Saturday — the only space allowed for the rally by the mayor of New York.

The event was fashioned after the Million Man March held in Washington, D.C. in 1995.

It was organised to promote unity among young black people, as well as to endorse issues ranging from an end to gang violence to reparations for descendants of slaves.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
\”We bear witness that the African man woman and child, when you beat us down, when you rape us, when you steal from us we always rise to the occasion, always rise to the occasion. At this point in our struggle we must be clear, that our youth, our youth, our youth are essential for us to move onto the so called next millennium. We won’t get to the next millennium if we can’t save our children.\
