In 1865 Former slave "Jourdon Anderson" added up his owed wages for he and his wife and wrote his former master the following letter for his reparations:
"Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you……………."
"Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years.
At twenty-five dollars a month for me, and two dollars a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to eleven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars. Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor's visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to. Please send the money by Adams's Express, in care of V. Winters, Esq., Dayton, Ohio.
If you fail to pay us for faithful labors in the past we can have little faith in your promises in the future. We trust the good Maker has opened your eyes to the wrongs which you and your fathers have done to me and my fathers, in making us toil for you for generations without recompense. Guys, give us (the Devils) a little credit. Slavery was horrific. Individual and institutional racism still exists. In some cases, it not only exists but it is still killing some Black folks. And I get the sensitivity of bringing up "Black on Black" crime (as real of an issue as it is) as some kind of retort to White racism. I will let you in on a dirty little secret that I am certainly not proud of. My great, great, great, grandparents up at least one patrilineal strand (and probably multiple lines as well) were slave owners. I know that 100%. I am one of those relatively rare people–folks with "pure" or "almost pure" White genetic background (most folks, Black and White, are indeed more mixed in genetic ancestry) that would fall into the category of "descendent of former slave owner". However, is it really far to assume that I have been some great beneficiary of White privilege? Why should I be held responsible–not just morally in a philosophical sense but economically as well when these acts were committed 4, 5, 6 and more generations ago? I humbly submit to Black folks that if you honestly examine what is fair, you will agree that, as a principle, individuals should not be held accountable for actions committed by others, over whom they had no control. Countries do NOT have money they fill their coffers by taxing the
citizens, so defacto reparations is a bill presented to both current day
citizens and or the children. The basis of both any half respectable
ethics system and common law is that each individual is responsible for
their own action, and that the proverbially sins of the father and
mother are not the responsibility or debt of their offspring.
This is pretty basic stuff, all to avoid that most people have incredibly abusive relationships with there own parents. Putting the short comings in their lives resulting from bad parenting, in a state of willful cognitive dissonance to get away from emotionally difficult inter familial strife that would result in confronting abuse behaviors and relationships.
