This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Once a highly successful drug dealer with annual income over $1 million and dozens of well dressed staff members that serviced upper class clientele, Marte was done-in by an underling and sent to prison where his poor health would continue to diminish and his very survival was at stake. Faced with almost no options he develops a unique approach to saving his life and redirecting his entrepreneurial skills in a positive direction.

In 2009, Coss Marte was sent to prison as the ringleader of a multi-million dollar cocaine operation. Grossly overweight and warned by his physician that his current lifestyle would likely kill him, Marte started to get in shape using the tools he had: his prison cell and his own body weight. Within a year he had lost 70 pounds and replicated his successful formula of body weight exercises for 20 other inmates. Four years later he was released early for good behavior. Coss was working at Goodwill Industries when he met Mike Rothman, Co-Founder of Thrillist. With Rothman’s mentorship, Marte started Coss Athletics: prison-style bootcamp classes for paying professionals several times per week. Coss then entered his personal training concept into a business plan competition focused on ex-offenders and won, earning him additional opportunities from executives at the NYSE and Gilt. @CossAthletics, cossathletics.com

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
