W.E.B. DuBois long ago began to articulate the schism in identity demanded of Black people by an America that scorned them. As a white man I have a different double consciousness, where I can know I am not Black and still dig this song and know it to be universally true. With a leap of love, and faith in African heritage, we can all embrace and belong to the legacy of a continent that seeded the Western Hemisphere with such great gifts as perseverance, community spirit, cultural rhythms, and the survivor's willingness to accept any fellow traveler willing to seek humble communion and share respect and love.
