It was the noise from the guns and cannons that scared the cattle and caused them to charge back towards the Songhai. Actually in another account it is said that the Moroccans broke ranks so that the cattle would pass through. It was 40,000 Songhai soldiers fighting 4,000 Moroccan soldiers. The Songhai could have done things much differently in order to increase their chances of victory. They could have sent a massive army into the desert and attacked the Moroccans during the night under the cover of darkness. They could have evacuated Timbuktu, Djenne and Gao and have Songhai archers hide in the buildings and ambush the Moroccans. The Songhai did send a small number of archers to attack the Moroccans during the night but like I said it was a tiny number of archers. In these case since the Moroccans were in the middle of a forest during the night what the Songhai should have done is sent a much larger army comprised of all archers and set the forest surrounding the Moroccans on fire.
Nice lecture, thanks for upload.
This man was a genius. I wish I got to hear him speak when he was alive.
