The town was known, locally and affectionately, as “Black Wall Street,” according to multiple reports, because of the noted prosperity enjoyed but the residents. Its wealth was the result of an oil boom in nearby Tulsa, which was, at the time and like so many other cities across the country, incredibly segregated..

– These events occurred in Tulsa Oklahoma.
– In 1921, Greenwood, a segregated area of Tulsa was thriving due to as local oil boom.
– The prosperous district earned the nickname, “The Black Wall Street.”
– The white population grew increasingly resentful of the successful African-Americans.
– Tension boiled over when a black man was accused of assaulting a white woman.
– An angry mob gathered at the courthouse where the man was being detained.
– Gunshots were fired between blacks and whites.
– the next day, a white mob descended on Greenwood and burned it to the ground.
– Nearly every business in Greenwood was torched, including libraries, hospitals and schools.
– Up to 300 people were murdered.
– Some by deputized white men who were also torching the city.
– More than 1200 homes were looted and burned.
– 9000 people were left homeless.
– By today’s standards 30 million USD of damage occurred.
– Decades past before the riot even gets mentioned in Oklahoma’s history books.
