From “Djabote” (1994)
Doudou Ndiaye Rose (born Mamadou Ndiaye 28 July 1930-19 August 2015) was a Senegalese drummer, composer and band leader, and was the recognized modern master of Senegal’s traditional drum, the sabar. He was the father of a musical dynasty which includes some of the most successful traditional musicians of contemporary West Africa. (wikipedia)
que la terre lui soit léger
The beauty here is how, just through the different kinds of drums and the different things they're struck with and the different ways they're struck, an entire song – not just the back-up rhythm to one – is being created. There is no need for any other kind of instrument, not voice, not flute, nothing. This is why he was called the mathematician of rhythm!
