Diop and Obenga's attempt to inject a racial agenda into the study of ancient Egypt forced UNESCO to assert that UNESCO 'was committed to to the cause of promoting international understanding…and that it had not been the intention of the Organization, when deciding to hold the symposium, to give rise to tensions between peoples or races', (p. 50). Commenting on Diop and Obenga's "thesis", it is stated in the official report that they 'were ill-advised…to refer to the series of criteria established by anthropologists to characterize the negro', (p. 51). Diop's 'forceful affirmation [of his "thesis"] was criticized by many participants', (p. 51).
Mainstream scholars hold that kmt means “the black land” or “the black place”, and that this is a reference to the fertile black soil which was washed down from Central Africa by the annual Nile inundation. By contrast the barren desert outside the narrow confines of the Nile watercourse was called dšrt (conventionally pronounced deshret) or “the red land”. Raymond Faulkner’s Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian translates kmt into “Egyptians”, Gardiner translates it as “the Black Land, Egypt”.
At the UNESCO Symposium in 1974, Professors Sauneron, Obenga, and Diop concluded that KMT and KM meant black. However, Professor Sauneron clarified that the adjective Kmtyw means “people of the black land” rather than “black people”, and that the Egyptians never used the adjective Kmtyw to refer to the various black peoples they knew of, they only used it to refer to themselves.
Diop and Obenga's work was massively critiqued by most participants at the symposium – as any historian of ancient Egypt knows and as is readily confirmed if one takes five minutes to read the report published in the UNESCO book
Abbot Jean Terrasson was a highly influential Roman Catholic/Freemason professor of Greek. However, Egypt's Rosetta Stone was not deciphered until the 1820s by Jean-François Champollion. Therefore, Terrasson was unable to read any Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!
